Our Mission

Empowering survivors of trauma to rebuild and love themselves through the healing powers of yoga and wellness.

How It Works

Tough as Milk provides yoga and other fitness classes free of charge to survivors of domestic violence. We hold classes in shelters and in the community to make wellness accessible to survivors during one of the most vulnerable times in their lives. We also provide yoga clothing and mats for clients to comfortably practice.

Shift events are fitness classes taught throughout the community and available for a donation of $10 per participant - all of which will go towards the funding of Tough as Milk and its survivor classes, expansion of services and outreach efforts.

Why Exercise?

After leaving an abusive relationship, many survivors suffer from PTSD, anxiety, depression, addiction and low self-esteem. A healthy exercise routine is a simple way for a survivor to invest in themselves and feel how strong they truly are. Exercise releases endorphins, which are chemicals known to improve mood (health.harvard.edu, 2009). Having goals, being patient with yourself mentally and physically and self-love are the cornerstones of our organization. It is often difficult for a survivor to find time for themselves, which is why we bring the classes to shelters.
